Fugitives who come to Germany go through very different phases as they build their lives here: a phase of arriving, one of exploring, learning, and finally becoming independent. This also changes the requirements for how refugee accommodation should be run and how the immediate neighbourhood should be included.

A functioning, committed living together in and with the neighborhood has a great influence on individual integration opportunities. In recent years, committed people throughout Germany have accumulated a wealth of experience in this area.

Our six-member team of refugees, volunteers, and former government employees compiled these experiences and observations and compiled them in a practical handbook. The handbook should help actors around new and existing accommodations to avoid mistakes and to recognize chances faster.

In workshops, exchange meetings and discussion rounds, full-time and voluntary workers and refugees have benefited from the experiences gathered throughout Germany.
